Rabbit Vaccination

Q: We have just got a new baby rabbit - what vaccination do they need?

A: All rabbits presently need vaccination protection against myxomatosis and both variants of a virus called Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease ( RHDV1 and RHDV2)

All these rabbit diseases are very common in Ireland and every year we see fatalities. Vaccination can be given from 5 weeks of age although we normally advise letting your pet rabbit settle in for a week before his first visit to the vets. We normally give the combined Myxomatosis and RHDV1 first followed by the RHDV2 vaccine 2 weeks later.

Please note: Even indoor house rabbits must be vaccinated as Viral Haemorrhagic Disease lasts months in the environment and can be carried by biting flies, on bedding, clothes, car wheels, shoes and even hay.
